...Cyril C. Perera was born on 3rd June 1923, in the Colombo District, Sri Lanka. After his school career he studied Art, Architecture and Building Engineering at the Colombo Technical College and joined government service. He received a further training in Australia under a Colombo Plan scholarship.
...From his school days he took a keen interest in literary activities and devoted his spare time to translate the best of world literature to enrich his language, Sinhala, which is an Indo-Aryan language with a rich literature over two thousand years old.
...For the last fifty years he has translated works of over one hundred and fifteen authors from about twenty countries, which consists of seventeen novels, one hundred and seventy five short stories, three poems, three long plays for the stage, twenty children’s stories and fifteen fables.
...Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Kreutzer Sonata, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, Nicolai Gogol’s Dead Souls, Mikhail Sholokov’s Virgin Soil Upturned, Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, Bruno Apit’s Naked among the wolves, Jack Schaefer’s Shane, Arthur C. Clarke’s The Deep Range , Ernest Hemingway’s The old Man and the Sea, Christoper Wern’s Beau Gest and A Simple Tale by Nikolai Evdokimo, are some of the novels he has translated.
...In 1998 he was presented with a Felicitation Volume by Sri Lankan writers and a special Award was presented by the Cultural Department in appreciation for the service he has rendered. In addition he has won seventeen International and local Awards.
...He is the Vice President of ‘The Peoples’ Writers’ Front’, a leading writers’ organisation in Sri Lanka, which is affiliated to the Afro-Asian Writers’ Organisation and to the Federation of International Translators, and he has represented the Peoples’ Writers’ Front at six international writers’ conferences. He is also a member of the English Literary Panel of the Cultural Department.
