...G. B. Senanayake (1913-1985) is known primarily as a novelist. However, his short stories have also had wide acceptance among Sri Lankan readers. He is known as the father of free verse. His fiction is mainly about urban middle class life in which he excels as a craftsman who has surpassed others in this genre. He has published two collections of short stories in 1945. These were Duppathun Nathi Lokaya (A World Without the Poor) and Paliganima (Revenge). Later he published three more collections in which a total of 35 short stories are included. The short story in this collection is from his Paliganima (Revenge)..

Gunadasa Amarasekera

...Gunadasa Amarasekera (born12th November, 1929) first ventured into the field of creative writing in the nineteen fifties. He is renowned as a poet, a short story writer and a novelist. His first collection of short stories Rathurosa Mala (Red Rose) was published in 1952. Up to now he has published fifty-seven short stories. Amarasekera was one of the pioneers in introducing the short story as a medium of artistic and poetic expression. Over the years he has gone beyond achieving mere formal perfection and has used the Sinhala short story as a powerful medium of social criticism and humanist commitment. The short story in this volume Puthage Shishathvaya (A scholarship for My son) is from his collection Marana Manchakaye Dutu Sihinya (A Death-bed Dream).

Gunasena Vithana

...Gunasena Vithana (born 25, September 1931) Well known’ as envoi and short story writer, Gunasena Vithana has written a number of novels and is the author of five collections of short stories. His first collection of short stories Aiya Wage Kenek (Someone Like own Brother) was published in 1971. Since then he has published Polow Geethaya (Song of the Earth) in 1974, Sinhala Piyakuta Dawa Demaki Mawakage Kusen Upon Puthakuge Wasthuwa (The Story of a SOB of a Sinhala Father and a Tamil Mother) in 1984, Sajeevi Chitrayai (A Living Portrait), in 1984, Bombayaka Rithmaya (The Rhythm of a Bomb) in 1984. His fiction portrays the concept of social realism. He is the winner of several State awards and the International Lotus Award.
