| 10th Godage Literary Awards - 2008 |

Godage Literary Awards were inaugurated in 1993 to recognize literary excellence. It is since evolved in to Sri Lanka’s leading literary awards. Launched by Deshabandu Sirisumana Godage, the awards were at first awarded to the best works of novels, short stories & poetry. In a latter stage awards were included the best novels, short stories & poetry written by novice authors.
10th Godage Literary Awards 2007 was held on 11 September 2008 at the BMICH with a large gathering of giants in the field of Sinhala literature, a large number of authors & readers. The guest of Honour was Speaker of the parliament Dr. W. J. M. Lokubandara.
After the lighting of the oil lamp by Sahithyawedi Gundasa Amarsekara the award festival commenced. The awards were given out as follows.
Best Novel: ‘Battalangunduwa’ by Manjula Wediwardhana
Best Short Story collection: ‘Golu’ by Raja Karunadasa
Best Poetry: ‘Yatiwiyana’ by Lakshantha Athukorala
Best Young People’s Literature (Novel): ‘Yapanaye sita Katharagamata’ by Gunasekara Gunasoma
Best contribution by a novice (Novel): ‘Uthum Senehasa’ by Nadeeshika Madhushani
Best contribution by a novice (Short Story collection): ‘Dada’ by Ashoka Piyarathne
Best contribution by a novice (Poetry): ‘Mangala Wappana’ by Ananda Bandara
The literary works were picked by an experience panel of judges comprised of Prof. Tissa Kariyawasam, Prof. Jindasa Danansooriya, Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri, Mr. K. K. Saman Kumara, Mr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, Mr. Nissanka Wijemanna, Mr. Jayantha Amarasinghe, Mr. Mahinda Pathirana, Mr. Denagama Siriwardhane, Ms. Pushpa Ilanganthilake & Mr. Chaminda Preethi Kumara.
An award for life time achievement was awarded to Prof. Siri Gunasinghe for his outstanding contribution in the field of Sinhala literature. This award, named ‘Diwaman Pranama’, was rewarded first time in this year.
500 books published since the beginning of this year was presented to the authors at the festival. This is a great feat achieved by Godage Publishers. We publish around 1,000 books each year, which resulted in winning the award for Publisher who has published most number of books consecutively for 23 years, since 1985.
The occasion was made colorful by the dancing troop ‘Thāla’.
This years main sponsor was Hatton National Bank. Other sponsors were daily Lankadeepa, Independent Television Network & Lakhanda radio. |
